Luke Shaw writes his name into United history books after fine feat vs. Brighton

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has earned a place in an exclusive club group following the win against Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday. United sign off in style United concluded their 2025/26 Premier League campaign in brilliant fashion, cruising to a comfortable 3-0 triumph over Brighton at the Amex Stadium. Already guaranteed third place regardless of the result, the Red Devils still delivered an intense performance to sink the Seagulls, who were chasing Champions League qualification. Patrick Dorgu and Bryan Mbeumo both found the back of the net in the first half to give United a commanding lead heading into the break. Bruno Fernandes assisted Dorgu’s goal, moving him ahead of Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry to claim the record for most assists in a campaign (21). Fernandes then got on the scoresheet almost immediately after the restart to virtually secure the victory for United. Shaw was once again named in the starting XI by Michael Carrick, who deployed him at left-back in a defensive unit that also consisted of Noussair Mazraoui, Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez. By making his 38th Premier League start of the season, Shaw has now been on the teamsheet for every top-flight match United have played. That durability has earned him a place in an elite group. Impressive feat Shaw has dealt with injuries during the course of his United career, so it’s a real testament to his mentality that he has been available for every match this term. He becomes just the fifth outfield player in the history of United to start every match of a Premier League campaign. Three goalkeepers have also managed the feat. Legendary United defender Steve Bruce first recorded the achievement in 1992/1993. He was followed in quick succession by Denis Irwin (1993/94) and Gary Pallister (1994/95) in the following two seasons. Notably, the iconic United trio accomplished this during 42-game seasons, when the Premier League had 22 teams. It took 25 years for another outfield United player to replicate the trick – Harry Maguire in 2019/20. Cameroonian goalkeeper Andre Onana was the last man to start every league game for United (2023/24). Other shot-stoppers who did the same were Peter Schmeichel (1992/93) and David de Gea, who did it three times – 2018/19, 2019/20, 2021/22 and 2022/23.
