A magnitude 7.5 earthquake shook the island states of Vanuatu and New Caledonia after midnight local time or shortly after one o’clock Icelandic time. The US Geological Survey reported the quake and warned of flooding in nearby Pacific areas.
The quake affected miles deep 415 miles east of Vao in New Caledonia.
