Key member of United’s leadership team picks up injury on international duty, Amorim will be furious

Manchester United right-back Diogo Dalot has been a key figure under Ruben Amorim so far.

The 26-year-old has featured in all four games this season, starting three of them, and was named as part of Amorim’s leadership team in the dressing room.

Dalot entered the international break in good form, helping the Red Devils pick up a 3-2 win over Burnley last weekend. The Portuguese set up Bryan Mbeumo to score United’s second goal of the game.

Dalot has also been a regular for his national team, and is currently away on international duty. However, United have now received a grim update on the player.

Dalot suffering from muscle discomfort

Portugal’s FPF have shared a statement announcing that Dalot has withdrawn from international duty with muscle discomfort.

“Full-back Nuno Tavares was called up this Thursday to the National Team A to take the place of Diogo Dalot. The international, who represents Manchester United, accused muscle discomfort and was dismissed by the Health and Performance Unit,” read the statement.

The news could be a huge blow for Ruben Amorim, who has counted heavily on his countryman since taking over at Old Trafford.

Dalot has featured in 39 of Amorim’s 46 games in charge, registering three goals and four assists. The player has operated on both wings for United, and his versatility has been an asset to the club.

Extend of Dalot’s injury unknown

The update from doesn’t mention the extent of the player’s injury, although it was deemed serious enough for him to leave the national camp.

United will be hoping that he can recover in time for the trip to the Etihad to face Manchester City in the Premier League on September 14.

The Red Devils invested heavily in the squad over the summer in a bid to kickstart a resurgence under Amorim. However, the Premier League giants opted against signing a new right wing-back, so Dalot’s injury could be a cause for concern.

United do have Amad Diallo in the squad, and the Ivorian has played regularly in the position since Amorim’s arrival. However, the 23 year old is generally considered a more attacking option for the role.

Meanwhile, Noussair Mazraoui recently returned from a lengthy layoff due to injuries, and the Moroccan can cover at right wing-back as well.
