Raphael Varane is set for a late fitness test, ahead of the Liverpool game today.
For many, Manchester United vs Liverpool is the fixture that many look for first when the schedule is announced. It’s a rivalry that’ll always provide the sparks. Today will be no different.
Anfield has not been a happy hunting ground of late. Simply put, United have been pretty shocking on the road for a few years – until Erik ten Hag came in.
United picked up the victory in the reverse fixture early on in the season, with the Reds looking to complete a double here, though it’ll be a tough test.
Perhaps things have been made even harder, with the fitness of Raphael Varane now in doubt…
That’s according to the Daily Mail, who state that the key United star is set for a late fitness test ahead of the Liverpool game today. Apparently, potential replacements, Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof, are ‘on standby’.
Apparently, Varane has been complaining of leg pain over the last few days. He is set to be assessed after breakfast, while a decision will be made on his availability.
United are ‘hopeful’ he will be fine to feature in this huge match, though the club are concerned enough that they have a couple of players ready to fill in if necessary.
This game becomes much harder without a fit Varane. Neither Lindelof nor Maguire really fill me with confidence in these big matches.
As is always the case with Varane, United have to approach it with caution. He’s an incredible footballer when fit, though he doesn’t have the best track record on the injury front. If there’s even a slight chance of making the problem worse, starting him here is absolutely not worth the risk.
