Kate Winslet raves about ‘extraordinary’ Manchester United star, amid Wayne Rooney criticism

Hollywood actress Kate Winslet has emerged as a big fan of Manchester United and England forward Marcus Rashford.

The Titanic star spoke in an interview with BBC News in which she praised the United forward’s campaigning work.

Winslet, 47, said Rashford caught her eye during England’s win over Wales, in which he scored two goals.

Last night Rashford was a substitute in the Three Lions’ World Cup last 16 victory over Senegal, playing the final 24 minutes.

Kate Winslet raves about Marcus Rashford

The actress said she viewed Marcus Rashford as an inspiration who she wanted her son to learn more about, after his campaign for free school meals for poverty-hit children.

She explained: “I was watching the match the other night with my son and I turned to him and said, do you have any idea how extraordinary that man is?

“And Joe said, oh yeah, he scored this goal. Then I said I’m not talking about football.

“Let me tell you exactly what that guy did during Covid. And I mean, hats off to someone like him and we do have to use our voice and try to at least raise awareness or ruffle feathers. We have to ruffle up the system. If it isn’t working, change it, fix it, do better.”

While Rashford’s off-field exploits have marked him out as an inspiration, they have been seen by some as a distraction on the pitch, with his form slipping last season.

His former Manchester United and England teammate Wayne Rooney questioned his priorities in comments to The Times just this weekend.

Rooney said: “His achievements were incredible, but I think it might have been a bit too much for him. Rather than being able to just focus on his football, there was a lot on his plate, whereas what we’ve seen this season is very much a focus on football first rather than anything else.

“From some of the goals he has scored, you can see he is in a different headspace.”

Rashford is Manchester United’s leading goalscorer this season with eight goals already, more than the five he managed the whole of last season, and is still England’s top scorer at the World Cup with three goals.

Dan is still wondering what would have happened if United had kept Juan Veron…
