BACK David Tully Feb 29th 2024 Manchester United are weighing up a move for Ajax goalkeeper Diant Ramaj, according to Bild reporter Christian Falk. The German journalist claims that the Red Devils are “interested” in the 22-year-old, along with Premier League rivals Chelsea and Arsenal. Ramaj only joined Ajax from Eintracht Frankfurt at the start of the season but he has been one of the few bright lights in what has been a difficult campaign for the Dutch club. Considering manager Erik ten Hag has already raided his former team a couple of times since being appointed United boss, you can’t rule out an approach being made for another Ajax player. What do United fans need to know about Ramaj? Up until this season, the German youth international had only played 2 senior matches. On both occasions, he was providing cover for Frankfurt’s first-choice keeper Kevin Trapp in games against Augsburg (January 2022) and Freiburg (January 2023). After moving to Ajax for €5m back in August, he didn’t start out as the No.1 either, having only established himself in the first team in late October. Since then, he has made 24 appearances, conceding 41 goals and keeping 3 clean sheets. Why are United interested in signing another keeper? The Red Devils bought Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir last summer so you wouldn’t think that recruiting another shot-stopper would be top of the club’s priorities for the next transfer window. However, question marks remain about Onana’s ability. The Cameroon international did impress against Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup on Wednesday night but he has made a number of mistakes during his first season at Old Trafford. Whether that will lead ten Hag to decide that he needs to replace his number one, though, it is up for debate. It’s more likely that Ramaj is just being scouted by the club’s recruitment department as a potential option for the future.
