Jamie Carragher has questioned Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer over a proposed tactical tweak ahead of the new season. United begin their Premier League campaign at home to Leeds United on Saturday (12.30pm). The Red Devils are aiming to build upon last season’s second-placed finish.

United have made a couple of big additions to their squad so far this summer.

Jadon Sancho has arrived from Borussia Dortmund for £73million, with Raphael Varane’s move from Real Madrid to be officially announced imminently.

Varane’s arrival is set to strengthen United’s defence and Solskjaer is widely reported to be considering a tweak in midfield because of it.

The Norwegian has played with a double pivot in the middle of the park for the majority of his tenure.

However, Varane’s arrival could mean he goes with a more adventurous approach.

But Carragher says it is unusual for a manager to change their basic tactics and doubts if it will be a success.

Carragher wrote for the Telegraph: “There’s talk of Solskjaer operating with a more adventurous midfield set-up and playing less frequently with a double pivot, but I find that a little strange to hear.

“When [Pep] Guardiola and [Jurgen] Klopp came in, they imposed their vision for the team straight away.

“They may not have had the players to deliver exactly what they wanted immediately but they had their way and went with it.

“Wasn’t the more attacking 4-3-3 United are talking about playing this season, with Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba in central midfield together, how they started against Villarreal? Pogba was particularly poor in that game.”

United, who begin the season at home to Leeds on Saturday, haven’t won the Premier League title since 2013.

Carragher believes the squad is capable this term but doubts if Solskjaer is the right man to lead them to the top.

“I think Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp would be confident of winning the title with this United squad,” he added.

“They have £50million-plus players all over the pitch. United have the most expensive starting XI in the Premier League at just over £500m, a shade more than what Manchester City’s best team cost even with £100m Jack Grealish in the side.

“Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane will bring improvement. Sancho offers a threat they haven’t had down the right and Varane brings pace, experience and medals at the back.

“It’s a good and expensively assembled squad. There should be real pressure on United to deliver this season. They have been through a period of transition, but that talk has to stop now.”
