Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher thinks new Man United signing Senne Lammens will become the club’s first-choice goalkeeper “pretty quickly”.
Both Altay Bayindir and Andre Onana have struggled for form at the start of this season and Carragher says that head coach Ruben Amorim will have no option but to throw the young shot-stopper in at the deep end:
“The Belgian lad [Lammens] is obviously a young goalkeeper with great potential and it just remains to be seen how long it will be before he goes into the team. I would imagine that would be pretty quickly given the form of the other two goalkeepers at Manchester United.”
“But he’s a young goalkeeper and, like we said when Manchester United brought in a young striker in Benjamin Sesko at the other end of the pitch, they will need time, that’s just the nature of the beast, certainly as a goalkeeper as well. I think the thing with the manager now is how quickly he puts this young lad in and I would imagine it would be pretty quickly.”
Why did Man United pick Lammens over Martinez?
Carragher also said that he was “surprised” that the Red Devils decided against recruiting Aston Villa’s Emi Martinez. The club had agreed personal terms with the 33-year-old, but they opted to go with the younger option.
Director of Football Jason Wilcox has reportedly placed his faith in the analytics department who believe Lammens has the potential to be a top-class keeper. It remains to be seen, though, whether he has the temperament to play for such a big club.
When could Lammens make his debut?
As we haven’t heard from Amorim yet, it is not guaranteed that the Belgian will be thrust into the lineup straight away as Carragher suggests.
If Lammens does get the nod, though, he could be asked to make his first appearance in the Manchester derby on Sunday, 14th September. That would be a big call from Amorim.
