James: Hopefully they give me the assist!Video
Looking back on the convincing performance against the strong Basque team, James revealed the secret to United’s triumph in his post-match interview with MUTV.
“It’s a great result for us, especially away from home,” our winger told MUTV’s Stewart Gardner in Turin.
“We knew it was going to be difficult with them sometimes having a lot of the ball but we knew there would be big spaces in behind and that’s what we capitalised on today.
“It was a great joy. Sometimes, it can be frustrating when they have a lot of the ball but we just had to be patient. We knew that as soon as we win it back, we got to move forward. They played a high line and we just had to exploit that really.“
The wide-man scored his fourth United goal of the campaign when he netted at the Allianz Stadium in Turin, adding to his goal against Istanbul Basaksehir in the Champions League and his Premier League strikes against Leeds United and Southampton.
The 23-year-old, who got the chance from the off in Italy, was happy to contribute for the Reds on the European stage again. Following a pass from Eric Bailly, he scored after an elegant solo run, cutting in from the right to great effect.
“I want to do the best when I’m on the pitch,” James said, before describing his goal.
“I was frustrated myself that I didn’t finish the chance I got from Bruno [Fernandes] before, so I had to take the next one, just keep working at it and, luckily, it went through the keeper’s legs.”
Before scoring our final goal of the night, James helped to set up Bruno Fernandes’s second strike. The goal was flagged offside but after a VAR check, the Portuguese magnifico’s effort counted, even if it was difficult to see whether Dan or Nacho Monreal actually got the touch.
“I always knew I was onside, when I heard it was Bruno, I knew that was behind so I knew it was going to be a goal,” James recalled.
“I was just thinking whether I meant to touch it to him, hopefully I get the assist for that. Bruno was a bit annoyed at me for not getting him an assist at the end but it was nice to get through at the end and score as well.”
