Jadon Sancho is set to be given either the No 7 or No 16 shirt at Manchester United, according to reports. The England international has completed his move to Old Trafford. And the club are currently preparing an official announcement as they look forward to welcoming the 21-year-old into the fold.

Manchester United have finally signed Sancho at the fourth time of asking.

They first tried to land the England international back in the summer transfer window of 2017, when Jose Mourinho was in charge.

But they ended up missing out on that occasion, with Dortmund managing to entice him to the Bundesliga with the guarantee of regular-first team football.

Under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, in 2019 and 2020 respectively, United twice failed in their mission to bring the 21-year-old to Old Trafford.

But, this summer, they’ve finally landed their man.

Express Sport understands everything has been completed for Sancho and, at present, they’re preparing to officially announce the youngster.

Shirt numbers have been a hot topic when it comes to the England star and, now, The National say he has two genuine options on the table.

The first, of course, is the No 7 jersey.

Currently worn by Edinson Cavani, it’s also been donned by club legends Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham, Eric Cantona and George Best over the years.

Last week, however, it was stated that Cavani was unwilling to give it up.

And, if United give Sancho the No 7 shirt, they risk upsetting the Uruguay international in the final year of his time at the club.

Anthony Martial was enraged when he was stripped of the No 9 jersey in 2016, which was then handed to Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

And, given Cavani’s stature within the game, they’ll want to keep the 34-year-old happy.

The second shirt number Sancho could wear is the No 16 jersey.

Again, it’s been worn by United legends over the years such as Michael Carrick and Roy Keane – who both won the lot during their spells at the Theatre of Dreams.

And what number Sancho ultimately decides to take remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, the club are continuing their pursuit of Real Madrid veteran Raphael Varane as his contract over in Spain winds down.

And Eurosport’s Dean Jones, speaking on The Football Terrace podcast, has claimed optimism is growing a deal will be struck – even if the club remain ‘concerned’.

“Manchester United can see the finish line on this deal,” Jones said.

“And that’s the place they’ve dreamed of being in recent weeks.

“They honestly were never sure it would go this far. And I spoke to someone over the weekend and I could really tell that the optimism, and the hope, were really there.

“This week was always going to be a big week because it’s a telling time for Madrid to get involved in this.

“And United, obviously, know the player is keen at this point. They finally believe the player was serious about coming to United.

“And now Real Madrid have been informed that is the case. Obviously, now, it’s all about a fee.

“United do not want to go over £50m so I’m a bit sceptical about this being done in the next few hours because that’s a lot of negotiating to be done.

“But things are definitely heading in the right direction and Varane does expect to become a United player. And that’s a big indication of how far the deal has gone at this point.

“Obviously, United are concerned this won’t happen. They’re not done yet. This is not a done deal.

“But it’s close. It’s getting close.”
