Jack Grealish has elite clubs across Europe on red alert this summer, but the mercurial England man first attracted Manchester United to his services close to a decade ago.

That’s according to former Aston Villa manager Alex McLeish, who handed the playmaker a debut for his boyhood club aged 16 during the 2011/2012 season.

Grealish, now 25, is set to take centre stage for the Three Lions at Euro 2020, which kicks-off tonight.

Speculation over his future at club level continues to mount, with United and neighbours Manchester City among those reported to be interested in a transfer swoop during the summer window.

Already set to cost any potential suitors a pretty penny, the would-be fee for Grealish will only skyrocket further if he enjoys the level of Euro 2020 success that the majority of observers are predicting.

Recalling his first meeting with Grealish, former Villa manager McLeish, who spent just one season in charge at the Midlands club, told Betfred: “I went to see the Academy boys on a Saturday morning as we were playing at home.

“Jack was there with his socks down – a precocious young talent.

“I was saying; ‘give Jack the ball, just get him on the ball’. All the swerving, the checking, the turning back, the tricks he had – this kid just had it. He was an absolute natural.

“I put him on the bench for one of the games, I think he was only 17 or something.”

How far will England go at Euro 2020 this summer? Let us know in the comments section below. McLeish added: “I spoke to his father, the Academy director about a new contract and we managed to secure him [to a new contract] again when there was speculation that Manchester United were waiting in the wings. And that was at a very young age.

“He’s an absolute Villa legend and he could become an England legend. Scotland must be at their best to stop him.”
