Manchester United defender Sam Murray has issued a touching goodbye message after confirmation that he will be released by the club.
On Monday, United issued their end-of-season retained list, which had Murray as one of nine players who will be departing Old Trafford upon the expiry of their contracts when this month ends.
Murray joined United from Huddersfield Town’s academy in 2017.
He made his debut for United’s Under-18s three years later at 16, during a 4-0 victory over Leeds United. He was a regular fixture for the Under-18s and Under-21s throughout his time at the club.
Murray played a big role in helping the Under-18s win the FA Youth Cup in 2022, alongside the likes of Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo.
He signed his first professional contract with United in 2023 and was included by Erik ten Hag in last summer’s pre-season trip to Norway.
Murray was handed a start against Rosenborg. But the 20-year-old did not make a senior competitive appearance for the Red Devils.
The defender will now begin the search for a new club as he looks to continue his professional career elsewhere.
Murray wrote on Instagram, “After seven years, my time at Manchester United has come to an end.”
