Raphael Varane’s transfer to Manchester United will be completed this week. The club announced an agreement to sign the Frenchman a few days ago.
Varane has said his goodbyes to Real Madrid and he will be unveiled by United next week once the formalities are done and he has quarantined.
The French defender’s prospective move to Old Trafford has been a big talking point, it is a real coup for the club to land him after 10 years in Spain.
Celta Vigo’s Denis Suarez, who has played against Varane numerous times and also had a loan spell at Arsenal as well as playing for City’s youth team, believes Varane will be a big hit at Manchester United.
Speaking to The Guardian, Suarez said: “Varane is elegant, efficient, but above all I’d highlight his tranquillity and the ability to transmit that to others, which is very valuable.
“It’s incredible how calm he is and that will give United a lot. A 10/10 signing and won’t have problems adapting to the Premier League.”
Experience and quality
There were some laughable comments from Danny Mills on Talksport, who questioned if Varane could cope with the Premier League.
Denis Suarez is a player who has actually played in both England and Spain, and his assessment of Varane’s likely successful transition to life in England is more likely to be accurate.
Varane has played at the top level for a decade and won everything there is to win for Real Madrid, including four Champions League titles.
Still only 28, Varane has plenty more to offer and his performances are still at a very high level.
Varane ranked inside the top 10 in La Liga for winning the highest percentage of his aerial duels last season: 75.3 per cent.
His quality on the ball stands out too. Varane ranked second in Real’s squad for progressive carries in possession last season with 4,406 yards. This ranked only behind Luka Modric.
The defender’s pace should also compliment Harry Maguire, and the duo have the potential to form an elite partnership, which could even allow United to compete for the Champions League.
