US President Joe Biden has imposed trade sanctions on the leaders of the coup and the military junta in Myanmar. The sanctions extend to military leaders, their families and their affiliates.
The US government is also working to prevent military access to Myanmar government-owned funds.
The action comes after a woman was shot in the head in protest against a military coup. The woman is now fighting for her life in a hospital in the capital Nay Pyi Taw.
Tens of thousands have protested in Myanmar following last week’s coup overthrowing the democratically elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi.
A White House statement issued following Biden’s signing of a directive imposing trade sanctions stated that Biden had called for a new government to take office. that Suu Kyi and others arrested last week will be released.
