Images of the first training session held by Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman since Lionel Messi’s exit was confirmed have come to the fore on Friday afternoon.

‘Not be staying’ The bombshell announcement which rocked football to its very core was of course forthcoming on Thursday evening.

This came in the form of the revelation that, after 21 years with the club, Lionel Messi would be forced to call time on his spell with Barcelona.

Just hours after it had been widely reported that an agreement between the two parties was close, the Blaugrana released a statement, confirming that they had essentially been left with no choice but to part with the club’s greatest-ever player.

The Catalans, in turn, pointed the finger of blame squarely at La Liga, for the ‘financial and structural obstacles’ laid in their path by those in a position of power in Spain:

‘Despite FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi having reached an agreement and the clear intention of both parties to sign a new contract today, this cannot happen because of financial and structural obstacles (Spanish Liga regulations).’

‘As a result of this situation, Messi shall not be staying on at FC Barcelona. Both parties deeply regret that the wishes of the player and the club will ultimately not be fulfilled.’

Barca stars react The mood at the Camp Nou in the near-24 hours since Messi’s departure, meanwhile, has proven one of understandable sadness and disappointment.

The Blaugrana faithful have made crystal clear their feelings regarding the club’s actions, with footage in line with that below no doubt set to follow in droves over the weeks to come:

And, if the first images to have come to the fore, showcasing the atmosphere at the club’s training ground are anything to go by, then it appears as though Barca’s stars have been hit just as hard by the news of Messi’s exit.

The likes of summer addition Sergio Aguero – known to be a close friend of his fellow countryman – Jordi Alba and even manager Ronald Koeman can be seen below, looking altogether forlorn:
