Howe hails Newcastle as Magpies move second with win at Leicester

Eddie Howe has hailed his side after Newcastle moved second in the Premier League table with a convincing 3-0 win at Leicester.

Newcastle picked up where they left off before the season’s pause and recorded a sixth straight Premier League win at the King Power Stadium.

Chris Wood opened the scoring from the penalty spot inside three minutes against his former side, before Miguel Almiron continued his phenomenal season with a well-taken second just four minutes later.

Almiron’s goal was his eighth in nine games and ninth of the Premier League season, as many as the Paraguayan managed in the previous four league campaigns combined.

Joelinton headed home a third from a Kieran Trippier corner to make it 3-0 to the visitors inside 32 minutes, with Newcastle’s push for Champions League qualification beginning to gain momentum.

Howe praised his team’s performance in the opening half an hour and was delighted to see the Magpies – who boast the division’s best defensive record – claim another clean sheet.

“Coming here knowing how difficult it was going to be, the start was really important to us,” Howe told BBC Match of the Day.

“The first half an hour we were excellent. It’s a trademark goal for Miggy [Miguel Almiron] and a really good team move.

“Leicester showed their quality in the second half and it was difficult to get the ball. I was keen for us to go on and control the game more. But I do think we minimised their threat. Credit to the team, it’s another clean sheet and that’s important.”

Howe added that his side ‘can do anything’ when asked whether Newcastle could maintain their form and secure Champions League football for the first time since 2002/03.

“We can do anything. The season is still young enough for all possibilities to exist for us. I want the fans to believe we can do anything.”
