How Jeremie Frimpong played a part in one of the worst moments in Manchester United history

Manchester United have been linked to Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong, but little do they know he played a part in one of the worst moments in Red Devils history.

Manchester United are being linked with Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong over a summer move to Old Trafford.

The Dutch full-back has arguably been the greatest right-back in world football this season, helping Xabi Alonso’s side to the Bundesliga and, so far, an unbeaten campaign.

It was a season filled with unbelievable moments for Frimpong and Co. Speaking of unbelievable moments, let’s, unfortunately, revisit one of the most shocking in Manchester United history, and not for good reason.

Sergio Aguero moment – up there with the worst in Manchester United history

On May the 13th 2012, during the final matchday of the 2011-2012 Premier League season. Manchester City, who hadn’t won the league title in 44 years, faced QPR at the Etihad Stadium.

Going into the match, City needed a win in order to snatch the title from Manchester United, but with just minutes left to play, they were trailing 2-1. Great for Sir Alex Ferguson and his United side, who were leading at Sunderland.

Then in a dramatic turn of events, Edin Džeko managed to score in the 92nd minute, levelling the scoreline at 2-2. However, this still wasn’t enough.

With seconds left in the match, City launched one last attack. The ball found its way to Sergio Agüero inside the QPR box, who fired home to give Manchester City their first Premier League title ever.

It was a cruel, bitter blow for the Red Devils, who had to face the fact they’d lost out on the title to their noisy neighbours in the dying embers of the fixture.

But a little-known fact, the subject of the article played a part in this fixture. He was in the stadium that day, having actually started his footballing career on the blue side of Manchester.

In a quickfire interview with GOAL, the Dutch defender was tasked with putting Robin van Persie and Sergio Aguero against each other in a series of attributes.

One of the topics was ‘clutch moments’, to which Frimpong obviously replied – Sergio Aguero. However, he also went on to tell a story of how he played a part in the Manchester City side that day.

“I think you’ve gotta give this one to Aguero. Etihad at the last minute. Bro, I was a ball boy that day. I was a ball boy at the Etihad. I ran on the pitch [after the goal].”

Frimpong played for Manchester City from 2010 – 2019, meaning in his academy days – he was around for the infamous 2011-12 campaign.

The Dutch defender may have chucked a ball to a player to get one of those barrages of Manchester City attacks started. The stars aligned perfectly for the Cityzen’s that day, so stranger things have happened.

If Frimpong does join Manchester United one day, best to not tell this story around the changing rooms.
