“Highly possible”: David Ornstein provides huge update on future of £70m United star

There is still a very good chance that Alejandro Garnacho leaves Manchester United this summer, according to the reliable David Ornstein.

Garnacho has made 51 appearances for United this season, scoring 10 goals and providing an additional nine assists in that period. However, speculation over his future remains rife. His performances haven’t been very convincing, with his decision-making in the final third especially coming into question.

In January, United entertained offers for him amidst interest from Napoli and Chelsea.

Napoli are believed to have made an offer to sign him, but the bid fell short of United’s expectations, leading the club to decide to retain him. It is understood that Napoli and Chelsea’s interest remains intact as the summer transfer window approaches.

A previous report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Bayer Leverkusen and Atletico Madrid are also eyeing Garnacho. United value the forward at £70m. His sale is especially appealing because as a homegrown player, it would be recorded as “pure profit” on the club’s books.

More recently, it was claimed that Garnacho could seek to exit Old Trafford if a deal for Matheus Cunha goes through. Cunha’s arrival could push him down the pecking order, limiting his minutes – something Garnacho is not too keen on at this stage of his career.

In this week’s Ask Orstein Q&A, The Athletic journalist addressed the future of a number of United players including Garnacho.

Asked if the Argentine is still linked with an Old Trafford departure, Ornstein answered, “Yes, we understand this to be highly possible — if proposals are deemed suitable by Manchester United and Garnacho himself.”

“As we know, exits for the likes of Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony, Tyrell Malacia, Casemiro and Rasmus Hojlund are also plausible, while the salaries of Christian Eriksen and Victor Lindelof will leave the wage bill.”

One player who is unlikely to be sold this summer is Kobbie Mainoo. United have been locked in contract talks with the player but an agreement has yet to be found.

Ornstein said about Mainoo, “There’s a growing sense that Kobbie Mainoo will stay, although there is a contract situation with him that needs to be addressed.”

Garnacho’s terms expire in 2028 while Mainoo’s deal runs out in 2027, although there is an option to extend his stay for 12 more months.
