“He’s going nowhere”: David Ornstein explains why United star INEOS desperate to sell will remain at Old Trafford

Ruben Amorim needs a lot of help in the summer given Manchester United’s current form and INEOS might need to move players on in order to raise cash for incomings.

Big-name players like Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo have been earmarked for huge sales while the co-owners also want to move on injury-prone stars like Luke Shaw.

Mason Mount is another player who has been hardly available since his £55 million move last summer. This season, the Englishman has garnered a grand total of 414 minutes of action with only six starts coming his way while the player has not completed 90 minutes in either of those appearances.

Last season, the ex-Chelsea ace managed 756 minutes, and in total he has missed 31 games last time out and has already been sidelined for 30 games this term.

Mount’s poor injury record

The 26-year-old cannot be blamed for his injury troubles but it makes very little sense for United to keep paying his £250,000 gross per week wages (via capology) given his poor availability.

But Amorim is a huge fan of the England international and feels his off-the-ball work fits his system perfectly while the midfielder can slot in at multiple positions.

“Mason Mount… I have to tell you I love that kid. You can look in his eyes that he wants this so bad. And this is the most important thing for me,” the head coach was quoted as saying.

“I know he was suffering from injuries, he was not on the pitch, but now he’s trying to stay fit and we hope he can continue to be fit, to show all the talent that he’s shown, for example, in Chelsea.”

And despite being linked with an exit, The Athletic‘s David Ornstein claims the 20-time English league champions will not sell the United No 7 in the summer.

Not only because the Portuguese tactician is a fan but also because United are unlikely to receive a high bid for the injury-prone star and they do not want to incur a loss at this stage.

Mount to stay

“I don’t expect Mason Mount to leave. Manchester United will be focused on keeping him fit and bringing the best out of him, because they think he is a great fit for Ruben Amorim’s setup and style.

“Furthermore, I can’t see any club offering Manchester United the level of money to produce an accounting profit — and there will naturally be reservations about his injury record. I imagine he’s going nowhere.”

Mount’s cameo against Nottingham Forest was encouraging as he went close with a shot from the edge of the box. Now, he has to start games and influence proceedings like he did during his time at Stamford Bridge.

But given his injury struggles, United fans are not holding their breath. This move looks destined to be another big-money deal gone wrong.
