“Here we go”: Fabrizio Romano confirms United set to miss out on perfect target as he seals move to rival club

Manchester United will miss out on Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah, with the player set to seal a move to Bayern Munich, according to Fabrizio Romano.

United could dip into the market for defensive reinforcements after an extremely poor season that has seen them concede 54 goals in the Premier League.

Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof are set to leave Manchester United this summer when their contracts expire. Evans may choose to retire, while Lindelof is expected to seek a new club, with United not planning to offer him a new deal. Their departures only heighten the club’s pressing need to bolster their backline options.

Tah emerged as a potential target for United ahead of the summer transfer window, largely due to the appeal of his availability as a free agent.

A report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that United were pushing to sign Tah on a free. But Ruben Amorim’s side were not the only party chasing Tah.

He was also mentioned to be on the radar of Barcelona and Bayern. Liverpool and Newcastle are also believed to have been admirers of the 29-year-old.

More recently, it was stated that Bayern were on the brink of securing Tah’s signature and now, Romano has confirmed that an agreement has been struck, effectively ending whatever hopes United harboured of landing him.

Romano wrote on X, “EXCLUSIVE: Jonathan Tah to Bayern, here we go!”

“The German defender has agreed deal, Bayer Leverkusen confirm they have been informed.”

“Bayer Leverkusen now wait for Bayern to make contact to discuss fee for Tah to be at the FIFA Club World Cup. New defender for Bayern.”

Tah made 33 Bundesliga appearances for Leverkusen in the just-concluded 2024/25 campaign, helping the side keep eight clean sheets in that period. He also scored three goals and provided one assist.

For United, it seems they will have to look elsewhere if they press ahead with plans to sign a new centre-back.
