“He came to the fore”: Stunned Rio Ferdinand left in awe of “sensational” United star after his dominant display vs. Athletic

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand showered praise on Casemiro following his dominant performance in the side’s 3-0 victory over Athletic Club.

Casemiro headed home on the half-hour mark after some silky wing-play from Harry Maguire, to give United the lead at a rocking San Mames.

Bruno Fernandes doubled United’s advantage seven minutes later, converting from the penalty spot after Dani Vivian was given his marching orders for a foul on Rasmus Hojlund. The skipper then grabbed his brace at the stroke of half-time with an emphatic finish.

United now have a commanding lead ahead of the return leg at Old Trafford next week.

Speaking on TNT Sports, Ferdinand was hugely complimentary of Casemiro, who rolled back the years once again and produced a classy performance.

Ferdinand said [as quoted by Daily Mail] about the five-time Champions League winner, “‘I don’t think Casemiro has put a foot wrong. He’s been sensational tonight. He has been so disciplined.”

“People have been talking about getting rid of him, his legs have gone etcetera. But I tell you what, he’s come to the fore when they have needed him.”

“He’s coaching this team through this and it’s a massive moment in the season for them.”

Robbie Savage, on co-commentary duty with Ferdinand, insisted that Casemiro was simply benefitting from a tactical tweak made by Ruben Amorim.

Savage explained, “I think he has realised, or Manchester United have realised, what he is good for. They were trying to play through him. But he’s more facing the game now, he knows what he’s doing.”

“Instead of playing through him, where he’s taking lots of touches, I think he’s facing the right way more times than not now.”

Ferdinand continued, “They’re not trying to play through him like a pivot where he’s got his back to things and he can be pressed and lose the ball. That’s not his game.”

“This makes it simpler for him but, also, they’re allowing big spaces around him where he would be exposed physically.”

“He’s got that support behind and communication.”

Ferdinand also spoke about Amad, who made his return to action after a lengthy period on the sidelines with an injury. The Ivorian came on as a substitute and looked lively.

Ferdinand remarked, “I’ve missed him you know. I’ve missed Amad. His nonchalance sometimes. He wants the ball under pressure, plays with a bit of risk.”

It remains to be seen whether or not Diallo will start in the second leg at the Theatre of Dreams.
