Harry Maguire likely out for the rest of the league season

Manchester United’s lone healthy center-back became the latest training casualty for the Reds. Harry Maguire is expected to miss three weeks with a muscle injury suffered in training, most likely ruling him out of action for United’s remaining Premier League fixtures.

The Athletic’s Andy Mitten reported he may make it back in time for the FA Cup Final at the end of May. Regardless, this is another example of poor squad management as training injuries continue to plague United this season.

The club released this brief statement after the news broke from reporters:

“Harry Maguire has sustained a muscle injury that will keep him out for about three weeks.”

With Casemiro already filling in at the back there isn’t much hope of a suitable replacement for Maguire. Dan Sheldon reported for The Athletic that Jonny Evans may be available on Monday against Crystal Palace, but he’s making his own return from injury after a month on the sidelines.

Including Evans, United currently have eight defenders missing time for various injuries. Of course some of that is bad luck, but there is no need for continuing high-intensity training in the midst of a crisis. Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes, and Scott McTominay are all likely out of action on Monday as well after playing through issues, something which has also seen Luke Shaw and Lisandro Martinez continually return to the physio after coming back to action too soon.

Erik ten Hag can use injuries as an excuse as much as he wants, but he has shown little willingness to budge on his methods or accept responsibility in the matter.
