Gotta buy a ticket! – Ranking the PL attackers with most shots this season

It’s one of the oldest sayings in the book, but if you don’t shoot, you won’t score. Some of the Premier League’s finest forwards have taken that advice on this season, peppering the goal with efforts in a bid to find the net.

Here are the five players with the most shots in the Premier League this season.

5. Darwin Nunez – Liverpool (61)

Darwin Nunez’s first season in the Premier League has been unmissable viewing. The headline arrival at Liverpool last summer, the forward arrived with a promising reputation and with a transfer fee that immediately raised expectations.

So far it’s been a mixed bag for the Uruguayan, who has occasionally delighted and often frustrated for Jurgen Klopp’s out-of-sorts side. Nunez has caused chaos on occasion with his mix of pace and power, but there’s a rawness to his game that Liverpool will want to refine.

A shoot-on-sight mentality has brought just five league goals for the 23-year-old, while no player has missed more big chances (16) than Nunez this season. However, that Erling Haaland (14) is second on that list and heading towards a record-breaking Golden Boot campaign will offer encouragement.

The chances are falling for Nunez and much of that is down to his own doing. An increase in confidence and composure could transform his fortunes. He’s also hit the woodwork on more occasions (5) than any other player.

4. Mohamed Salah – Liverpool (62)

Mohamed Salah has topped the Premier League for shots in three of the last four seasons, with the Egyptian rarely needing a second invitation to let fly at goal.

However, Salah’s average of 3.1 shots per game is the lowest he has recorded across his six seasons at Liverpool and the Reds will want to improve those numbers as the club look to turnaround their fortunes.

The 30-year-old won the Premier League’s Golden Boot for a third time in 2022/23, but has just seven league goals during the current campaign. Bringing the best from Salah will be key to Liverpool’s hopes of salvaging their stuttering season.

3. Erling Haaland – Manchester City (75)

Erling Haaland is a phenomenon.

Never before has a footballer made such an impact in their debut Premier League campaign, with Haaland breaking records and butchering defences. The Norwegian lives and breaths scoring goals and has bulged the back of the net at a frightening rate this season.

It’s already 25 league goals for the season for Haaland, the most prolific debut campaign from a foreign footballer in Premier League history. A reminder, it’s February.

Haaland’s goals have come from 75 shots this season, averaging a goal every three shots at goal. The numbers are mind-boggling.

2. Aleksandar Mitrovic – Fulham (74)

Fulham have exceeded all expectations on their Premier League return, with the Cottagers on course to end their recent yo-yo existence in comfortable fashion.

Key to the performance of Marco Silva’s side has been the goalscoring form of Aleksandar Mitrovic, who has silenced his pre-season doubters with a fine season. After a record-breaking Championship season last term, the forward has proven he belongs at the top level. Mitrovic’s 11 league goals have already matched his best-ever total at this level and leave him fourth in the Golden Boot standings.

The Serbian striker has fired 74 shots at goal for Fulham this season, with only Darwin Nunez (5.55) having averaged more than Mitrovic’s 4.1 shots per 90 minutes.

1. Harry Kane – Tottenham (83)

Harry Kane leads the rankings for shots on goal this season, in what has been a fantastic season for the England captain.

Erling Haaland’s goal record has somewhat shadowed Kane’s season, but the 29-year-old has scored 17 goals in just 22 league games. That figure already matches his 2021/22 haul and has seen Kane climb up to third in the Premier League’s all-time goal chart.

Kane became just the third player – after Alan Shearer and Wayne Rooney – to reach 200 goals in the division last weekend, a milestone moment which also saw him eclipse Jimmy Greaves as Spurs’ all-time record goalscorer.

Shearer’s divisional record is the one Kane will now want to hunt down.
