BACK David Tully Jun 25th 2024 Manchester United don’t currently have the resources to finance a move for Benfica midfielder Joao Neves, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano. Speaking on the United Stand YouTube channel, Romano said that Erik ten Hag’s side deem the Portuguese international their “dream target” but they may have to consider more “realistic” options: “The real problem is the Financial Fair Play because, at the moment, you can’t go and spend €120m (£101m) onJoao Neves for example.” “Joao Neves is a player they love. They’ve been scouting [him] for months. The same for Arsenal, same for Paris Saint-Germain. The club who really tried in the recent days also, with some concrete contacts to start the process to sign the player, is Paris Saint-Germain… but, for Manchester United, at the moment, it is really difficult because Benfica want the release clause paid for Joao Neves.” “So [it] has to be €120m, maybe you negotiate on payment terms but I don’t think it’s going to change a lot for Manchester United in this moment. So the kind of ‘dream target’ is Joao Neves but I think they have to be – they will be – realistic and consider also other options for that position.” Supporters on X are still hopeful of agreeing a deal for Neves: Get it done — Reggie (@b58388) June 24, 2024 Wait for sales then talk — RedDevilZone (@UtdTransferr) June 24, 2024 Pay it over 5/6 years what’s the issue? — Will Roche (@WillRoche17) June 24, 2024 Do it with yearly installments and bonuses — Jonathan Dsouza (@johnny10976) June 24, 2024 pay and don’t speak — El Protagonista (@CR7STIANOOOO) June 24, 2024 Get him on loan with a buy for next season like what psg did with Mbappe when he was at Monaco — Sheldon Coutinho (@sheldonsavioc) June 24, 2024 Get an agreement with neves, let him play at Benfica this season, next season give them 80M+ Add ons and get it done — Humble Rizzter (@RizzMaker8) June 24, 2024 Why are United so desperate to sign Neves? Many observers believe the 19-year-old could be a generational talent. United captain Bruno Fernandes has waxed lyrical about the teenager on multiple occasions, as has Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva. However, to secure his services this summer, it’s likely that United would have raise most of the £100m required by offloading players. Getting the likes of Mason Greenwood and Jadon Sancho off the club’s books would help massively but it remains to be seen who is willing to meet their valuations.
