Gerrard set for Man United reunion as Aston Villa appointment confirmed

Aston Villa have named Steven Gerrard as their new manager following the sacking of Dean Smith on Sunday.

Southampton’s 1-0 win on Friday proved to be the final straw and brought an end to Smith’s three years at Villa Park, leaving the club just two points clear of Burnley who occupy the final relegation place.

With the reigning Scottish Premiership-winning manager leaving Ibrox, it means that he will return to the Premier League for the first time since leaving Liverpool in 2015 with the former captain knowing the rivalry with Manchester United all too well.

Smith became the fifth managerial casualty of the season as teams prepared for the international break after Xisco Munoz, Steve Bruce, Nuno Espirito Santo and Daniel Farke were relieved of their duties.

Aston Villa have already reigned victorious over the Reds this season after Kortney Hause’s goal proved to be the difference as Bruno Fernandes blazed over from the spot in stoppage time relinquishing hopes of a draw.

Gerrard has previously had a managerial stint with Liverpool’s U18s before succeeding Graeme Murty in 2018 before helping the Gers rise up the Scottish Premiership and ending Celtic’s reign of success in the division in 2020.

The former Anfield man won’t have long until he goes face-to-face with his former rivals as Manchester United travel to the Midlands on January 15 for a 5:30 kick-off. It looks set to be his first meeting with Unitedsince his red card for a stamp on Ander Herrera in 2015.

What remains to be seen from a United standpoint is who will be in charge come the turn of the year as the scrutiny surrounding Ole Gunnar Solskjaer continues, following the defeat to Manchester City.
