Jadon Sancho was substituted after just 36 minutes of Manchester United’s Champions League opener in Switzerland.
United had been looking good for the win at 1-0 up until Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s red card.
Then came a tactical reshuffle with Diogo Dalot brought on, and Sancho sacrificed.
Sancho’s plight amid his slow start to his career at United made news in Germany, where he spent the past three seasons.
Newspaper Der Western wrote: “The Champions League also started for Jadon Sancho on Tuesday evening. But his premier class debut for Manchester United he certainly imagined differently.
“At Borussia Dortmund, Jadon Sancho was a superstar. At Manchester United, the professional is still having a hard time. This evening was also to be forgotten for him.”
Sancho will kick on
Sancho started last season slowly for Borussia Dortmund. He did not score a Bundesliga goal in his first 11 games of the season, netting in the 12th, which only occurred in January.
He then kicked on, scoring a total of eight Bundesliga goals and also providing 12 league assists, with eight coming from January onwards.
The winger is a big talent who won’t stay unproductive for long. He is adapting to his new team’s system, his teammates, and the Premier League.
Sancho’s confidence is also likely affected by the combination of his slow start making him anxious, trying to live up to the pressure.
His experience with England in the summer won’t have helped in any way, with a lack of rest, confidence sapped by not being first choice, and the shootout nightmare.
The good headlines will come for Sancho, possibly as soon as this weekend. But even if it takes a little longer, indeed into the second half of the season, patience will pay off.
