Gary Neville full of praise for emerging Man United star, player has the ‘potential’ to be something ‘good’ for Reds

Gary Neville has spoken highly of Rasmus Hojlund during a promising debut season at Man United.

Manchester United certainly had a mixed season in 2023/24. The Old Trafford club were hit with injuries aplenty during the campaign, though to Erik ten Hag’s credit, the Reds finished the season with an FA Cup trophy.

The Dutchman is coming in for some stick due to the season on the whole, while some of his signings did fail to perform. The likes of Antony was poor, while Mason Mount and Lisandro Martinez barely played due to treatment table woes.

However, I was personally impressed with Rasmus Hojlund, who was acquired for big money from Atalanta twelve months ago.

Although the Dane did show the inconsistencies of youth during some stretches, it was certainly a positive campaign on the whole. This all came during a time where Hojlund wasn’t really given much service at all, while the forward still managed to score sixteen goals in thirty-five starts. That’s a decent return all things considered.

Before Hojlund’s Denmark took on Slovenia yesterday, Gary Neville was full of praise for the emerging United star, claiming that he has the potential to be something ‘pretty good’ for United in the long-term.

Check out what Gary Neville had to say in full here:

“I think he has done well,” Neville is quoted as saying by the Manchester Evening News. “When you think about what Manchester United have done to players in the last 10 years, they’ve broken seasoned internationals who have signed for big money.

“The lack of stability in the club over the last 12 months, all the changes, particularly up at the top, they’ve got basically no centre-forwards other than him. They’ve got wide players who were out of form that weren’t giving him the type of service he needed.

“But he scored 16 goals in 35 starts and most of all, he stood up that kid. During the tough times in the season he was the one who I thought ‘what a personality he’s got.’ That’s all you need.

“I think he should have been supported more by having a more experienced striker alongside him but they couldn’t get one in and it was all left to him. I think he’s had a good first season and he’s got the potential to be something pretty good.”

For me, it was the effort, energy and intensity that Hojlund played with. He always gave 100% whenever he was called upon and that’s the minimum requirement for any Manchester United player.

As Neville says, Hojlund would only improve with better service given to him for in-form wide players, while the Dane is still so young and developing himself. In a perfect scenario, this is a player who could score goals galore for any side in world football.

Let’s hope Hojlund has a good European Championships and comes back to Old Trafford brimming with confidence.
