Garnacho called up to Argentina squad

Manchester United’s young forward Alejandro Garnacho has been rewarded for his fine recent form with a call-up to Argentina’s senior national squad.

The 18-year-old has been named in a 35-man selection by manager Lionel Scaloni, as the South Americans prepare for their first fixtures since they won the World Cup back in December.

The Albiceleste are set to face Panama in a friendly at El Monumental in Buenos Aires on 23 March, before playing Curacao in Santiago del Estero five days later.

Garnacho’s United team-mate Lisandro Martinez has also been selected by Scaloni, as have the other 25 players who were victorious in Qatar.

Alejandro was born and raised in the Spanish capital of Madrid, but qualifies to play for Argentina through his mother.

It’s not his first inclusion in the senior squad – he was previously called up last March for the concluding World Cup qualifiers against Venezuela and Ecuador.

Garnacho benefited from training with the likes of Lionel Messi but did not play in either game, although he did make his debut for Argentina’s Under-20s, for whom he has scored four goals in five appearances so far.

The 2022 FA Youth Cup-winner has made his first-team breakthrough under Erik ten Hag this season, scoring decisive goals against Real Sociedad and Fulham prior to the World Cup break and netting recently at Leeds.

After winning his first senior trophy, the Carabao Cup, last weekend, his brilliant strike on Wednesday helped us beat West Ham United and therefore reach the Emirates FA Cup quarter-finals. The news of his Argentina call-up is yet another reward for the hard work our no.49 has been putting in behind the scenes.

Well done, Garna!
