Gareth Southgate breaks silence over one Man Utd player as he is desperate to avoid ‘big distraction’ for England

England manager Gareth Southgate has made his stance perfectly clear on Manchester United player Mason Greenwood ahead of Euro 2024 in Germany this summer.

Mason Greenwood made his return to football in 2023 after Spanish side Getafe signed him on loan, with a long-term future at Old Trafford no longer viable.

The 22-year-old Getafe man was arrested in 2022 and later charged with different allegations against him, which Greenwood staunchly denied.

The charges against Greenwood were dropped in 2023 before Manchester United confirmed last summer that he would leave the club after their internal investigation.

The former England international has secured regular playing time at Getafe this season, with Greenwood scoring six times in 24 appearances in La Liga.

Despite his return to first-team football, Greenwood’s international future has been cast in doubt and could receive an offer to switch national allegiance in the future.

Southgate on Greenwood and England

Gareth Southgate has refused to close the door on Mason Greenwood’s international future with England, despite the allegations that the Manchester United player faced.

Greenwood received his senior England debut under Southgate and has only managed one appearance for the Three Lions, which came against Iceland in 2020.

Southgate admitted that it would be unlikely that the former Three Lions forward would receive a call-up to the England squad for Euro 2024 this summer.

The England boss admitted that he has “not tracked” Greenwood “closely” since his return to football, saying he needs to “know more details” about the situation.

Speaking to reporters, he said (via Goal): “Well, for me, I don’t think it’s something for pre-Euros.

“I think allowing him to get his career going again abroad appears to have been a good move, but I have to say I have not tracked it closely.

“I think at this moment in time it would be a big distraction for the team and let’s see where that leads next season.

“I would need to know more details about the whole thing before it was an option.”

Southgate on England at Euro 2024

Southgate has already faced criticism after he snubbed United teenage sensation Kobbie Mainoo for England’s upcoming friendly matches against Brazil and Belgium.

Kobbie Mainoo has had a sensational season for United so far and the Red Devils star appeared likely to be called up by Southgate ahead of Euro 2024.

England, who were runners-up at Euro 2020 under Southgate, have punched their ticket to Euro 2024 and will be in Group C alongside Slovenia, Denmark and Serbia.

Southgate is likely to call up United players for England’s Euro 2024 squad, including former club captain Harry Maguire and Red Devils star Marcus Rashford.

However, the England boss has broken his silence over one United star and admitted that he is concerned about whether or not he will be eligible to play at Euro 2024.
