Frustrating setback for United forward as he picks up injury in training – report

Manchester United forward Ethan Ennis has suffered an injury blow, it has now been confirmed.

Highly rated

A host of United youngsters are making a strong case for first-team promotion, and Ennis is very much part of that conversation.

Ennis has enjoyed a steady rise in United’s youth ranks since joining the club from bitter rivals Liverpool in the summer of 2021. He was the standout academy signing for United in an otherwise uneventful window.

He put pen to paper on his first professional contract with the Red Devils immediately after turning 17. Then disaster struck a year later when he picked up an ACL injury, which ruled him out of action for months.

Since returning, he has been a regular for United’s youth sides. He featured in the United team that claimed the FA Youth Cup, a squad that also contained the likes of Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho.

Last season, Ennis went out on loan to League Two side Fleetwood Town. It was a productive spell, with the United forward notching three goals and seven assists in 39 appearances.

He also spent time on loan at Doncaster Rovers previously, during the 2024/25 campaign. He helped the club win promotion from League Two. Last month, a report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that United had triggered their option to extend Ennis’ stay at Old Trafford by at least one more year.

Ennis was expected to push forward in his development, but he has now picked up an injury at the very moment he seemed likely to feature in pre-season.

Setback

The Manchester Evening News report, “Ethan Ennis would have been involved in United’s first pre-season friendly against Wrexham last weekend if not for picking up a small injury in training that will take a few weeks to recover from.”

“Ennis enjoyed an outstanding loan with Fleetwood Town last season. United activated their option to extend his contract by 12 months, and talks over a new deal are heading in the right direction.”

“It’s just a small injury, but the timing of it is nevertheless frustrating for the talented winger.”

When Ennis returns to action, United will be confronted with a major dilemma. The youngster appears to have outgrown youth football, leaving Carrick and his coaches with a straight choice: elevate him to the senior squad or sanction another loan move.
