Fresh identity: Man United’s Leigh Sports Village home gets brand new name – official

The home of Manchester United Women and Leigh Leopards rugby league team has received a new name.

Leigh Sports Village gets renamed

Leigh Sports Village will now be called the Progress with United Stadium. The change takes effect immediately after it was approved by councillors at a recent meeting.

The ground is where United play most of their home matches, with only a handful of games per season staged at Old Trafford.

Council leader David Molyneux said about the change [as quoted by Manchester Evening News], “It’s important to note that Progress With Unity isn’t just our initiative, it has partnership working and the strength of our communities at its heart.”

“In many ways, Leigh Sports Village encapsulates this approach; it is a complex of facilities to be proud of, hosting professional and grassroots organisations and delivering community-based services.”

He added, “We believe the new name for the stadium is therefore an appropriate step to promote what we are trying to achieve here in our borough and be a figurehead for our shared values.”

Derek Beaumont, owner of Leigh Leopards, remarked, “The Progress With Unity Stadium is a great facility that we are proud to call our home.”

“Our partnership working with the council and wider community is stronger than it’s ever been.”

Leigh Sports Village’s evolution

Opened in 2008, Leigh Sports Village in Greater Manchester is a multi-purpose complex combining sports, retail, and housing facilities.

In addition to hosting United’s home fixtures, the 12,000-capacity stadium, now known as the Progress With Unity Stadium, also regularly stages international rugby league matches.

Leigh Sports Village also served as one of the host venues for the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 tournament.

Meanwhile, Marc Skinner’s side are back in WSL action on Sunday when they go away to Liverpool.
