Time is running out for Manchester United to recruit a holding midfielder before the summer transfer window shuts.

The biggest void in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’ s squad at the moment certainly lies in the holding midfield position where Nemanja Matic is the only natural holding midfielder in the squad.

United ‘s draw with Southampton over the weekend was evidence that the position is an area of weakness and one the opposition can exploit with the right tactics.

Despite the pressing need to recruit, United look unlikely to make a midfield signing this summer.

Nonetheless, MEN have picked out four potential wildcard options who could be perfect for Solskjaer’s side.

Yves Bissouma The Brighton midfielder is one of the best in his position in the league and probably one of the best players playing outside of the traditional top six clubs.

Bissouma has everything; poise, technical ability and he can read the game with precision.

He has the ability to be able to control games and dictate things from the centre of the pitch.

On top of that he can instigate attacks and he is capable of thwarting dangerous situations created by the opposition too.

Brighton – who have no pressing need to sell, particularly after Ben White’s big-money move to Arsenal – could demand a hefty fee for his services this summer, but if United can somehow negotiate a deal Bissouma is one signing that could help them get to the next step in Solskjaer’s metamorphosis.

Sander Berge The Norwegian international is an astute holding midfielder who is comfortable in possession and who has the ability to maraud forward and instigate chances for his teammates.

Berge could be available for a lot cheaper this summer following Sheffield United’s relegation to the Championship.

The 23 year old is definitely too good to play in England’s second tier and he could be a smart buy for United who are in need of a player of his ilk.

Berge could help dictate the tempo at the heart of United’s midfield and he is one the club should seriously consider as a last-minute option.

Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa Another midfielder who could be available for a bargain price and who has Premier League proven pedigree.

Zambo Anguissa proved last season he is capable of playing in the division and caught the eye at Fulham. His lobbed through ball to assist Ademola Lookman against Manchester United will live long in the memory.

The Cameroonian international is solid defensively too and his ability to control the game coupled with his physical attributes would definitely make him an upgrade on Nemanja Matic.

For a cheap price, Man Utd could do with a lot worse and it would be worth a punt even if the midfielder only comes as a temporary solution before United are able to recruit one of the more premium targets.

Uros Racic The Serbian international has been a rare shining light on a dreadful campaign for Valencia last season.

Racic caught the eye with his tenacious style and ability to dictate the midfield. The club will likely allow the 23 year old to leave for the right price and Racic could definitely suit the Premier League.

He has a menacing height and the physical attributes to suit United’s needs.

His ball-playing skills and ability to progress the ball into the final third would also be a vital addition at Old Trafford.

Racic is not the name everyone wanted like Camavinga or Declan Rice, but he could fulfil the role just as well.
