“Forget his dark days at United”: Another Amorim reject is proving him wrong with incredible start at new club

Manchester United’s goalkeeping situation has been the subject of much discussion and speculation this season.

Ruben Amorim headed into pre-season with Andre Onana and Altay Bayındır as his goalkeeping options. However, Onana quickly fell out of favour under the United head coach and was eventually replaced by Senne Lammens.

Trabzonspor pounced on the opportunity and secured the Cameroon international’s services on a season-long loan.

Onana makes promising start

The 29-year-old has looked impressive in his first two appearances for the Super Lig outfit, underlining why United spent an initial €51 million to sign him from Inter Milan in 2023.

On his debut, Onana earned a man of the match award in his side’s 1-0 loss to Fenerbahce after making eight saves.

Against Gaziantep on Saturday, the Cameroonian showed his incredible ability with the ball at his feet, making a pinpoint long pass for Paul Onuachu’s equaliser.

Reacting to his start to life at Trabzonspor, Turkish media outlet Fanatik wrote (via Sport Bible): “After Okay [Yokuslu] was sent off and Trabzonspor were reduced to 10 men, Onana kept his team in the match with his saves.

“He cleared the ball off the post for En Nesyri’s goal and fought back as far as he could on his return. His performance was enough to make one forget his dark days at United.”

Taka Gazete reported: “The 29-year-old, who exuded confidence in goal, made several crucial saves throughout the match and stood in the way of the widening gap.”

“He played a fantastic game and his experience is so evident,” added Milliyet.

Amorim yet to hand debut to Lammens

While Onana has seemingly found his feet in Turkey, Lammens is still waiting to make his debut for United, having moved to Old Trafford from Royal Antwerp on deadline day. The Belgian turned down Galatasaray and Aston Villa in favour of joining the Red Devils.

Bayındır has had a number of shaky moments between the sticks. In his five Premier League appearances, Bayındır has conceded eight goals and remains without a cleansheet.

However, Amorim continues to back the Turkey international. Considering his reluctance to deviate from his rigid ideas and make changes, fans might not get to see Lammens shielding United’s net anytime soon.
