“Following Him Closely” – Reliable Journalist Says United Could Make Surprise Move For £10M Rated Defender

BACK David Tully Jun 17th 2024 Manchester United are keeping close tabs on Red Bull Salzburg defender Oumar Solet, according to RMC Sport reporter Fabrice Hawkins. The usually reliable journalist claims that the Red Devils are “following him closely” along with “several” other high-profile European clubs. Solet is a former France Under 21 international who joined Salzburg from Lyon in the summer of 2020. He has just a year left on his contract and Hawkins claims that he could be sold for between €12m (£10m) and €15m (£12.7m). Who else is interested in signing Solet? It is believed that there are at least seven clubs pursuing the 24-year-old’s signature. Four teams in Germany, including Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen, Champions League finalists Borussia Dortmund and Stuttgart are in the mix. United are also likely to have one competing club from the Premier League and another from Italy trying to snap up Solet. Signing a centre-back is top of United’s list of transfer priorities Erik ten Hag’s side have already had a £35m bid (plus add-ons) rejected by Everton for Jarrad Branthwaite, while they also reportedly hold an interest in Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo and Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi. Solet would certainly be a much cheaper addition to the squad, if Hawkins’ reported asking price is accurate. He is, though, relatively untested at the very highest level. The biggest games he has played in have been in the Champions League. The centre-half has made 14 appearances in total across qualifiers, group fixtures and a single round-of-16 tie against Bayern Munich. It’s fair to say that Solet’s record is rather poor, having won just 2 of those matches. His team was also on the receiving end of a 7-1 hammering in the second leg of that aforementioned tie versus Bayern a couple of years ago. If he does move to Old Trafford, he will need to step up his game. Watch Football and Sport programmes on Shots! here David Tully David has worked as a football reporter for the last fifteen years.
