Five players who could join Manchester City this summer

Manchester City remain the dominant force in the Premier League but the key to success is strengthening while on top.

With several rivals bidding to wrestle the Premier League crown from the Citizens, recruitment will be decisive for Pep Guardiola’s four-in-a-row champions.

Here are five players who could join Manchester City this summer.

Joshua Kimmich (Bayern Munich)

Joshua Kimmich is edging closer to an exit from Bayern Munich with no talks planned for an extension to a deal that expires in 2025. The German could seek a new challenge as Bayern move in a different direction under Vincent Kompany and has Europe’s elite monitoring his situation.

Pep Guardiola knows the player well having been responsible for Kimmich’s signing at Bayern Munich, where the midfielder developed into an elite talent under the Spaniard’s tutelage. Kimmich can operate as an eight, six or right-back to a world-class level and that fluidity marks him out as a Guardiola-type signing. Given he’s likely to be available in a cut-price deal this summer, it’s a signing that makes a lot of sense for the Citizens.

Bruno Guimaraes (Newcastle)

Another option to complement Rodri in central midfield is Newcastle midfielder Guimaraes. The Brazil international has been a huge fan favourite since he arrived at St James’ Park from Lyon, emerging as one of the most complete midfielders in the Premier League.

Guimaraes led the Premier League for fouls drawn, ranked third for successful take-ons and fifth for progressive passes and through balls in 2023-24, while no player in the division covered more distance.

All-action and influential, he concluded the campaign with seven goals and eight assists from 37 league appearances. Manchester City are known admirers but the period to activate his £100m release clause has passed this summer. It’s unlikely Newcastle would accept a lower offer.

Dani Olmo (RB Leipzig)

Guardiola is understood to be a long-term admirer of Dani Olmo and interest in the Spain midfielder has accelerated. Doubts over the futures of Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva have heightened the need for a creative midfielder and Olmo fits the bill.

The 26-year-old has impressed across four seasons at RB Leipzig and scored a career-best eight goals in all competitions in 2023-24 despite an injury-hit campaign.

That return included a hat-trick in the German Super Cup win against Bayern Munich, while he has enhanced his reputation at Euro 2024 with Spain. A match-winning performance from the bench helped La Roja eliminate hosts Germany in the quarter-finals, as Olmo opened the scoring and set up Mikel Merino’s extra-time winner. A release clause of €60m (£51m) makes the Spaniard attainable this summer.

Theo Hernandez (AC Milan)

Manchester City have moved away from traditional up-and-down full-backs of late, with Guardiola using the likes of Josko Gvardiol, Manuel Akanji and Nathan Ake as more physically dominant defenders in wide roles. The Citizens, however, continue to be linked with Theo Hernandez who could be open to the transfer after five seasons at AC Milan.

The France international is one of Europe’s best left-backs on the front foot with Hernandez often representing a bullet train when marauding forward with intent. He has scored an impressive 27 league goals across his time in Serie A and has earned inclusion in the divisional Team of the Year in each campaign to date. He won’t come cheap, but few full-backs can match his explosive attacking output.

Andriy Lunin (Real Madrid)

Ederson’s exit appears to be edging closer with interest from the Saudi Pro League in the Brazil international. Stefan Ortega’s impressive performances in Ederson’s absence last summer have reportedly convinced City that the latter is disposable should he seek a new challenge, though another goalkeeper would be sought to compete for the number one shirt.

The Citizens have been linked with Andriy Lunin, who began last season as third-choice at Real Madrid before playing a crucial role in the club’s Champions League and La Liga success. He was outstanding as the Spaniards dumped City out of the Champions League quarter-finals in a performance that has caught the eye of the Premier League champions. With Thibaut Courtois reclaiming his role as Real’s number one after injury, Lunin could be open to an exit.
