EA Sports have waded into the Cristiano Ronaldo vs Lionel Messi debate, with the new FIFA 22 player ratings confirming which player is better on their new game this year.
The debate between Ronaldo and Messi, and who is the greatest footballer of all time, has been debated by football fans across the world for years. Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville revealed his choice of the two on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football program, debating his opinion with former Liverpool defender and fellow pundit Jamie Carragher.
“It would absolutely be Cristiano Ronaldo,” Neville said on MNF. “He can score with his left foot, his wrong foot, he can score with his right foot, he can score from distance, he’s probably the best poacher now in football, he can score from penalties.
“He would be the player in the history of football, that I’ve watched that I would bring off the bench if I had someone win the game for me.
“I do think he is the greatest football that’s ever lived.”
But, Carragher disagreed. He said: “Ronaldo is not the greatest player of all time. His pal here [Lionel Messi is].
“Messi has a better goal record than Ronaldo. Messi is a playmaker. Messi can run a game. Ronaldo can’t do that – again not a criticism. But no way in the world he’s the greatest player of all time.
“Two absolutely wonderful players but Messi, as a player, can take you to a place where you can’t believe.”
Following this heated debate, EA Sports has since revealed the top 22 highest-rated players in this year’s FIFA title, FIFA 22, which is due to be released in the UK and worldwide on Friday, October 1.
And according to the new FIFA 22 player ratings, the debate between Ronaldo and Messi has been settled once and for all.
FIFA 22 player ratings: Cristiano Ronaldo vs Lionel Messi Messi has been confirmed as the highest-rated player in FIFA 22, after being given an overall rating of 93, two ratings higher than Cristiano Ronaldo who has been downgraded from a 92 overall rating in FIFA 21 to a 91 overall rating in FIFA 22.

Comparing Ronaldo’s FIFA 21 card to his FIFA 22 card, Ronaldo has been downgraded in his pace (-2), dribbling (-1), defending (-1) and physical (-2), yet his passing has improved (+1) and his shooting has stayed the same.
This is the fourth successive game in the FIFA game series that Messi has been a higher player rating than Ronaldo, with the last time that Ronaldo was a higher overall rating than Messi coming in FIFA 18 when the Portuguese striker was still at Real Madrid.

The Argentinian winger has been higher rated than Ronaldo in nine of the last 12 FIFA games, only being lower-rated in FIFA 17 and FIFA 18 and both being 94 overall rated in FIFA 19.
