Manchester United forward Matheus Cunha has pulled out of the Brazil national team after suffering an injury in the 3-2 win over Burnley.
Cunha sustains injury
Cunha was named in the starting XI that beat Burnley to claim United’s first win of the 2025/26 season.
However, he only managed 31 minutes before he was forced to come off with what appeared to be a hamstring injury. Ruben Amorim replaced Cunha with Joshua Zirkzee, who saw out the rest of the contest at Old Trafford.
After the game, Amorim was asked for an update on Cunha and insisted that he didn’t know the full extent of the issue.
The United head coach only pointed out that United needed Cunha to be competitive throughout the campaign.
Ahead of Brazil’s World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Bolivia next month, the South American national team have confirmed that Cunha has withdrawn from the squad.
Cunha withdraws from Brazil squad
The Brazil national team released a statement on X which read, “Flamengo’s attacker Samuel Lino was called up this Saturday (30) by coach Carlo Ancelotti for Brazil’s matches against Chile and Bolivia, in the last two rounds of the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers.”
“After a conversation between the medical departments of Manchester United and the National Team, attacker Mateus Cunha was released from the call-up due to the muscle injury suffered in the match against Burnley, in the Premier League.”

United supporters now face an anxious wait to learn the severity of Cunha’s injury and how long he will be sidelined.
Hopefully, it’s nothing serious and the 26-year-old returns to action as soon as possible.
Cunha has been a breath of fresh air since he joined United earlier in the summer from Wolverhampton Wanderers. The Red Devils forked out £62.5m to snap him up from Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Although he has yet to open his goalscoring account, he has come close on several occasions. His standout quality has been his exceptional ball-carrying and dribbling, which have consistently helped drive the team higher up the pitch.
