As Elliot Anderson continues to emerge as the Premier League’s hottest midfield prospect, links to Manchester United refuse to go away, with Fabrizio Romano now offering the latest.
United’s failure to strengthen their midfield last summer was a blunder one they are determined to correct next year.
The thinking is clear: under Ruben Amorim, United’s engine room is crying out for a dynamic midfielder. Someone technically gifted, capable of covering ground, shielding the back three, and progressing the ball with purpose, creating chances from deep.
Such profiles are rare. And among the few to fit that mould is Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson.
Praised for his exceptional ball control, efficiency, and a hybrid of box-to-box energy and deep-lying playmaking, Anderson has become the talk of the English football scene.
His technical ability and versatility; he can operate in any central role, has many wondering how top clubs managed to sleep on him last summer.
Latest on Anderson to United
While United fans may be unsure where their club truly stands in the Anderson race, Fabrizio Romano has offered a telling update.
On Give Me Sport, he said:
“Nothing is concrete on this [Anderson to United] yet. Just normal scouting activity from what I’m told, but nothing advanced or concrete yet.”
It is an update that may leave United fans uneasy about their chances of landing the Premier League standout.
Due diligence
But maybe INEOS are simply doing their due diligence before deciding whether to go all in.
Yes, United need midfield reinforcements, but they cannot afford to get it wrong. Not this time.
With Amorim already assembling a decent team, midfield additions are the final piece of the puzzle. If the 20-time English champions get it right, United could be back.
So while Anderson has impressed, he still needs to give United a reason to prioritise him.
He must justify his selection over other brilliant midfield options like Adam Wharton, Carlos Baleba, and Angelo Stiller.
And he must convince United he is worth breaking the bank for and worth beating Manchester City and Newcastle to the punch.
