Bayer Leverkusen have reached an “agreement in principle” to complete the appointment of former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag as their new head coach.
Ten Hag has been out of work since United sacked him in October last year.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS relieved him of his duties while the club was languishing in 14th place in the Premier League table after nine top-flight games.
Ruben Amorim replaced Ten Hag in the Old Trafford dugout.
Ten Hag has been linked with a number of clubs, including his former side Ajax and of course, Leverkusen. The Bundesliga outfit seemed like his most likely destination.
Leverkusen are on the hunt for a new boss, with Xabi Alonso expected to take charge of Real Madrid. He will succeed Carlo Ancelotti, who is set to become the head coach of the Brazil national team.
Alonso quit Leverkusen after leading them to their first Bundesliga title in 2024 in an unbeaten league campaign. Die Werkself also completed a domestic double, beating Kaiserslautern in the German Cup final.
They’ve gone trophyless this term but still managed to finish in second place, 13 points adrift of Bayern Munich.
A report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Ten Hag was closing in on the Leverkusen job and now, the reliable David Ornstein has confirmed that a principal agreement has been struck between the concerned parties.
Ornstein notes that Leverkusen are working on documentation in a bid to finalise Ten Hag’s arrival at the BayArena.
Ten Hag boasts prior experience of German football, having managed Bayern’s second team from 2013 to 2015.
In his two full seasons at United, the Dutchman won the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, while also finishing third in the 2022/23 campaign.
