Erik ten Hag hails one Manchester United player who was ‘fantastic’ against Brentford

From the highs of beating Liverpool in the FA Cup to whatever Saturday night was, Manchester United’s ability to be consistently inconsistent is simply infuriating.

That dramatic win over Liverpool was supposed to be the springboard for United to really kick on and end the season on a high.

Saturday’s trip to Brentford gave United a chance to show that the dramatic scenes at Old Trafford a fortnight ago weren’t just a flash in the pan and that Erik ten Hag’s side could produce big results when needed.

Instead, United were second best in West London and were frankly very fortunate not to lose against a dominant Brentford side.

The stats don’t look good; Brentford had a staggering 31 shots on the United goal but looked to have lost it when Mason Mount popped up with a late goal for United.

United couldn’t hold on – even for just a few minutes – as Kristoffer Ajer rescued a point for the Bees.

Even the most ardent of United fans must accept that Saturday’s display was simply not good enough – and that United got away with one by not losing.

Few players really impressed but Ten Hag did find somebody to praise after the game…

Andre Onana display

Goalkeeper Andre Onana has come under scrutiny since his £47.2million move from Inter Milan.

The Cameroonian has been in and out of form this season and has made some glaring mistakes at times.

Onana has been solid of late though and Saturday was another fine performance from the former Ajax stopper.

Onana racked up four saves, two high claims and one clearance in a fine display with one double-save just before the hour mark to keep United level.

The simple fact is that Onana is having to face far too many shots right now and he can’t be expected to save everything whilst the players ahead of him allow so many chances to be created.

Erik ten Hag on Onana

For now though, Ten Hag is happy with Onana’s display as he told United’s official website that his goalkeeper was ‘fantastic’ against Brentford.

Ten Hag really appreciated the saves Onana was making but admitted that he felt sorry for Mount after his apparent winner was cancelled out.

“I thought we were good in certain situations and when we were winning, we didn’t deserve it, but we should take the winning and do so more often,” said Ten Hag. “We were fighting and we created some great chances and Andre Onana was fantastic tonight. Rasmus Hojlund had a great chance. When you make the winning goal that is when you must bring it over the line. I am very pleased for Mason [Mount] but I also feel sorry for him as it should have been the winner,” he added.

Onana has grown over the course of the season and is proving himself to be a more than capable replacement for David De Gea.

Hopefully, this first full season in England – with the ups and downs that have come with it – will stand Onana in good stead to kick on again next season.
