Manchester United parted ways with Erik ten Hag last October after a disastrous start to the season left the club languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League table.
Unfortunately for United, things haven’t improved under Ruben Amorim with the new head coach struggling to get his message across to the players Ten Hag left behind.
Since his sacking, Ten Hag has been linked with numerous roles but is yet to make his return to the touchline.
However, as reported by The Mirror, the 54-year-old’s hiatus could be about to come to an end, given events in Germany this week.
Borussia Dortmund’s loss to Bologna in the Champions League proved the last straw for the board who have since relieved Nuri Sahin of his duties at the club.
Dortmund Director, Lars Ricken said he has “lost faith” in Sahin’s ability to get the best out of the side and claims the decision to pull the trigger was “unavoidable.”
Ten Hag is now the bookies’ favourite to replace the Turk, who leaves Dortmund after a wretched run of four defeats on the spin.
Should Ten Hag take the job he will find BVB in a similar position to how he left United – in the wrong half of the table and struggling for form.
It’s reported Ten Hag has a ‘very good’ relationship with Dortmund advisor Matthias Sammer, which could prove pivotal in the final decision on Sahin’s replacement.
Another interesting subplot to the move would be the impact on the future of Marcus Rashford, who has been linked with a switch to the German side this month.
Rashford enjoyed his best spell in a United shirt under the guidance of Ten Hag and Dortmund chiefs could be persuaded to loosen their purse strings given the potential in reuniting the duo.
However, the pair did have their issues at Old Trafford and Ten Hag will be best placed to inform the club as to whether a deal would be worth pursuing.
Despite his turbulent spell at United, there is no doubt Ten Hag is a talented coach with a string of high profile managers failing to perform under the current conditions at Old Trafford.
Furthermore, the Bundesliga may well be better suited to the Dutchman’s style of play with the frantic nature of English football proving too much for Ten Hag at times.
No formal offer has been made by the Germans as things stand, but with the Bundesliga now back in full swing after the winter break, developments are expected in the coming days.
