Epic battle between United and noisy neighbours on the cards as Amorim, Guardiola eye the same “world-class” star – report

Manchester United completed a remarkable comeback against Olympique Lyonnais to progress to the semi-finals of the Europa League but question marks continue to surround Andre Onana’s future.

He put in a much-improved display at Old Trafford in comparison to his first-leg horror show but he still did ship four goals, not the best statistic for a goalkeeper.

And his error-strewn displays this season have not convinced Ruben Amorim, who is on the lookout for a new shot-stopper in the summer.

Lots of names have been linked with a move to Old Trafford with one prominent name being Diogo Costa of Porto. In fact, the Portugal international has been a long-term target of the club.

United scouting Costa

As per Record (via Sport Witness), the Red Devils sent an “observer” to the Dragão to watch the Porto No 1 in action in their league game against Famalicao.

Costa has kept 18 clean-sheets this season but his form has not been as good as in previous seasons but that has not stopped suitors from clamouring for his signature.

In fact, The Mirror have reported that United’s noisy neighbours Manchester City also like the 25-year-old, in fact they want to secure his signature in the summer as Ederson’s successor.

The “world-class” star has a release clause in the region of £63 million with two years still left in his contract which means Porto are in a strong negotiating position.

City feel £50 million could get the deal done, a fee United could struggle to afford given the financial constraints at the club and the multiple positions in need of urgent reinforcements.

Pep also wants him

“Manchester City will step up their interest in Porto keeper Diogo Costa following another injury set-back for current No 1 Ederson. Costa, 25, is seen as the perfect replacement for the Brazilian.

“The Portuguese international has a £63 million buy-out clause in a contract that still has two seasons left to run. That is likely to be too rich for City, but incoming director of football has a strong relationship with the player’s agent, Jorge Mendes – and the Blues believe that an offer of around £50 million could be enough.

“Manchester United are also big admirers – but don’t have the finances to trigger the buy-out clause or challenge their rivals in the race for Costa’s signature.”

It will be interesting to see what ultimately happens with Onana in the summer and if the 20-time English league champions can muster up enough money to buy a new goalie.
