Helgi Pétursson, a musician and one of the forerunners of the Gray Army, has decided to run for chairman of the National Association of Senior Citizens. He says no one has challenged him to run for president.
Helgi announces his decision in an announcement to the media.
“It is common in announcements like this to refer to the person giving in to a lot of pressure and non-stop phone calls. That has not been the case. However, some of my friends and allies in the fight for better conditions for the elderly, who I have talked to about this before, have accepted these ideas with goodwill, “says Helgi, who many know from the band Ríó Tríó.
“In my mind, this step is a continuation of participation in the Gray Army’s struggle for decent living conditions for older people, freedom to participate in work, various human rights, recognition of older people’s contribution to society, coordinated health care and the fact that older people want to influence their own life. Until the victory! ”
Þórunn Sveinbjörnsdóttir, who ends her four-year presidency this year, says that her season will end according to law this year. There is a maximum of four years in the chairmanship of the association.
Þórunn had not heard of Helgi’s candidacy and no other candidacy had been received. Helgi says in the announcement that he hopes that the general meeting will be held in the spring and Þórunn says that Covid – 19 the epidemic will decide that. 120 people can be expected at the meeting, but in addition, the companies in the country, which are 55 in number, also have to hold their annual general meetings. About thirty thousand people belong to the organization.
Last year’s meeting took place 30. June at Hótel Saga but the timing was chosen with regard to the situation in the community.
