Dennis, Awoniyi dare Devil at Old Trafford

Super Eagles duo Emmanuel Dennis and Taiwo Awoniyi will look to take advantage of Manchester United’s centre-back crisis when Nottingham Forest visits Old Trafford Tuesday, PUNCH Sports Extra reports. The encounter is the first since their infamous 8-1 defeat at the Theatre of Dreams in 1998. Awoniyi, who scored his fourth Nottingham Forest goal in 16 games across all competitions in their 4-1 win over Blackburn Rovers to seal a quarter-final place in the Carabao Cup, will be aiming to score in back-to-back games for the Tricky Trees since he arrived at the club. Dennis on his part is seeking to score his third goal in five games against Erik ten Hag’s fifth-placed side that have been looking notably short on fit and available defenders as they resume the top-flight campaign following the World Cup. In 2021, the 25-year-old scored a goal and created two assists for Watford as they thrashed Manchester United 4-1 in a league fixture at Vicarage Road. The previous year saw the Nigerian forward get on the score sheet for his former Club Brugge in their 1-1 draw against Manchester United in the Europa League competition. With the visit of the Tricky Trees battling to avoid an immediate return to the Championship, hoping to pile on the pressure in their own quest to finish in the top four. Harry Maguire has been ruled out of the game due to illness while both Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane are unavailable after being afforded extended holidays following their respective involvement in the thrilling tournament showpiece between Argentina and France in Qatar a fortnight ago. United are also without the likes of Axel Tuanzebe and youngster Teden Mengi through injury at present, with Phil Jones seemingly out of the picture and versatile full-back Diogo Dalot having also picked up a knock playing for Portugal at the World Cup. That left Sweden’s Victor Lindelof as their only fit and available senior centre-back, supported by highly-rated youngster Rhys Bennett, recently promoted to the first-team setup along with midfielder Kobbie Mainoo.
