Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani has stepped up his efforts to be ready in time for the start of the Premier League season next weekend by hitting the gym and working on his fitness levels.
As reported by MEN Sport, Cavani, alongside fellow United attacker Jadon Sancho, will report back to the club’s Carrington training base next week when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side will put the finishing touches to their preparations for the season opener against Leeds United at Old Trafford next Saturday lunchtime.
By the time the former Napoli and Paris Saint-Germain striker returns to Carrington next week, he will have had more than five weeks off from when Uruguay were knocked out of the Copa America by Colombia.
Issuing an update on both Cavani and Sancho’s current situations, Solskjaer told United’s club website : “Hopefully they’ll be fit when they come back in with us.
“They’re due to come in after the weekend. There are different circumstances as to why they haven’t joined us yet, but it’s a long season and they had to have a little more time off.”
Although Cavani has not yet returned to pre-season training ahead of the start of the new campaign, the striker, who netted 17 goals for the Reds last season, has been putting in the hard yards on his own with the help of a trainer.
Taking to Instagram, the striker uploaded a video of himself going through an intensive work-out, highlighting that he is looking to get himself in the best possible shape ahead of the new campaign. He accompanied the video with a thumbs up emoji.
The video drew plenty of responses from United supporters who were delighted to see him putting the hard work in, as well as from United goalkeeper David De Gea.
The Spaniard sent the striker a one-word message saying: “Dale” with a muscle emoji.
With Marcus Rashford poised to miss the first couple of months of the season or so, there is going to be a sense of pressure on Cavani’s shoulders to deliver the goods for United this term. Whether or not, however, he will start against Leeds remains to be seen.
