Legendary former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is reported to have recommended Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn to the club and technical director Darren Fletcher is in agreement.
The 26-year-old midfielder has been at Villa Park for three years after signing from Hibernian back when Villa were plying their trade in the Championship. But it could’ve been very different if Fergie and Fletcher had their way.
McGinn has made 111 appearances in three seasons with the Midlands club and was a key figure as the club finished 11th in the Premier League this season, featuring in 37 of their 38 games under Dean Smith.
According the The Athletic , McGinn is a name that was mentioned on Manchester United ‘s shortlist in their search for a new defensive midfielder, with the player ‘held in high regard’ by the former Scotland international.
Fletcher knows exactly what it takes to be a United midfielder in the Premier League, racking up 223 league appearances for the Reds.
McGinn is now preparing himself for a summer of international football, as he represents Scotland at Euro 2020. They have been placed in Group D alongside Croatia, England and Czech Republic.
