Manchester United legend Paddy Crerand believes prospective new signing Raphael Varane is a ‘class act’ of a similar quality to Rio Ferdinand.
Crerand, who played 397 times for United and was part of the iconic 1968 European Cup-winning team, echoed Solskjaer’s thoughts.
“He’s a class act,” Crerand said of Varane.
“He played in the 2018 World Cup for France and stood out. He’s a totally class act.
“I don’t think there are many top central defenders anywhere. He reminds of Rio Ferdinand actually – that’s how good he is.
“He’s excellent with the ball at his feet and he makes everything look easy, exactly the same as Rio. That’s because they’re terrific players. They make things look easy. They can read the game well.”
Varane has won the Champions League four times at Real Madrid.
It’s a comparison a number of commentators have made. Varane carries himself on the pitch with the same grace as Ferdinand, the so-called ‘Rolls Royce’ defender.
Due to continued COVID-19 restrictions, it will take a little longer for Varane’s move to United to become official, but fans are already excited by the prospect of the Frenchman at Old Trafford.
In a decade-long career at Real Madrid, Varane was an important part of a side that won four Champions Leagues as well as a string of other titles.
“I think he’ll be a great signing for United,” Paddy enthused, “and at a great age as well; he’s been there and done it.”
