Manchester United’s Champions League group-stage schedule for 2021/22 has been released by UEFA.
The Reds are in Group F of this season’s competition, alongwith Serie A side Atalanta, Spain’s Europa League winners Villarreal and Young Boys, the champions of Switzerland.
The campaign begins in less than three weeks from now, with United travelling to Bern for an opening encounter with Young Boys on Tuesday 14 September (kick-off 17:45 BST).
We have visited the Wankdorf Stadium once before, three years ago, when a Paul Pogba double and Anthony Martial’s goal gave us a 3-0 victory over the same Swiss opposition.
There then follows two games at Old Trafford, with the first giving us an opportunity to enact revenge on Villarreal for the heartbreaking Europa League final penalty shootout defeat in May.
It won’t be easy when the Yellow Submarine visit on Wednesday 29 September (20:00 BST kick-off) though: all five previous meetings between the sides have finished level and manager Unai Emery is a notably wily operator in European competition.
After the October international break, there will be a first-ever meeting with Gian Piero Gasperini’s dangerous Atalanta side (Wednesday 20 October, 20:00 BST).
The Bergamo club have reached the knockout stages in each of the last two seasons and are being tipped as Serie A challengers this season – they will be backing themselves to pick up a result in Manchester and at the Gewiss Stadium three weeks later (Tuesday 2 November, 20:00 GMT) when the reverse fixture is scheduled.
United will travel to Spain on Tuesday 23 November for an early kick-off (17:45 GMT) against Villarreal, before the group stage closes out on Wednesday 8 December (20:00 GMT), when Young Boys come to Old Trafford.
