“Cold shower”: National press ask whether summer signing took the wrong decision by signing for United

Manchester United striker Benjamin Sesko has received criticism for his performance versus Grimsby Town in his first start for the club.

Sesko arrival

At various points in the summer it looked like the Slovenian international would be heading to Arsenal but they failed to agree a deal with Red Bull Leipzig.

Later on, Newcastle United looked in pole position to seal a deal and made a couple of official bids for the player.

Nonetheless, the forward expressed his desire to move to Old Trafford and United successfully completed a £66 million deal with the Bundesliga club.

He has come off the bench twice in the Premier League and was given his first start in United’s embarrassing exit to fourth division Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup second round.

Poor performance

The striker did get himself involved with some headed chances but failed to connect particularly well with his teammates.

The Peoples Person highlighted that the forward suffered a cruel reality check with his performance on the night.

Despite playing the entire 90 minutes he only completed seven passes and missed six chances, including a last-gasp effort that was skied from just under the crossbar.

He was also bullied by the League Two defence despite his giant frame, losing 10 out of 12 duels.

Slovenian press react

His nation’s press gave a scathing review of the player’s full debut and also questioned his summer decision.

Newspaper Ekipa claimed that it was “bizarre” that he took the 10th penalty in the shootout. Even though that has since been explained to the player suffering cramp.

What’s more, they describe his first start as a “cold shower” referencing the pouring rain that went on during the match.

Outlet 24 Ur posed the question, “Sesko and Manchester United: did the Slovenian make the wrong decision?”

They did state that it is too early to tell but that a move to Newcastle would have been an easier transition.

Finally, Football Mania concluded, “Benjamin Sesko needs time, but he doesn’t have it anymore since yesterday! The countdown of minutes played without a goal has begun.”

Sesko will hope to answer his critics in his homeland by finding the net against Burnley tomorrow and then when he will likely represent his nation Slovenia against Sweden and Switzerland next month.

Alex is a huge Manchester United fan, inspired by greats of his homeland such as George Best, Harry Gregg and Norman Whiteside. Proud owner of such niche shirts such as Kleberson, Eric Djemba-Djemba and Gary Neville. Grew up pretending to be Ruud van Nistelrooy and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the back garden, with little success.
