Man United could be tempted by a January move to sign Joules Kounde.
The Red Devils are in a proper slump right now. After a steady start to the season, the problems quickly started to mount for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Our play has been pretty poor for the most part, though there’s only so long positive results will mask the deep-rooted problems.
One issue that has arisen this term is the defence. It’s always had issues, but this time around, when Raphael Varane isn’t playing, it has been a proper mess.
Well, according to AS, United could look to rectify that mistake in the mid-season window. Apparently, Sevilla are concerned that United could make a January move for their star defender, Joules Kounde.
Right now, the Frenchman has a £68m release clause within his current contract, while interest in him from United (and elsewhere) has been documented by the media over the last twelve months.
We’ve kept two clean sheets in the best part of 25 games. For a club with serious trophy aspirations, that’s not good enough. Sure, we look miles better when Varane is in the team, but he can’t do it all on his own.
Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly remain inconsistent, while Harry Maguire has taken a serious step backwards. With Rapha now out for the next few weeks, I struggle to see where the next clean sheet will come from.
There’s no doubt Kounde looks like someone who could come in and upgrade our defence from day one. However, in football, there are no guarantees. Panic buying in the mid-season window is a pretty sure-fire way to show that you’re struggling.
You also have to factor in the position of our current manager. Let’s be honest, Solskjaer’s job is far from secure. He may like Kounde a lot, but who is to say any potential new manager will? It could end up being wasted money if the new boss isn’t keen.
For now, I’d imagine we will approach this one with caution.
